What is the significance of the "Calacas" used on the front cover?
The "Calacas" or "Skulls" are widely used in festivals celebrating the Day of the Dead. However, individually they signify the beginning of life and its different stages until death. They are abstract symbols of the beginning and the end of time; of life and death.
What does Mario hope to accomplish with his writing?
In his debut novel, "The Kids on the Block," Mario deals with kids coming of age and doing the things all kids do when they are in the process of growing up; in the process of experimenting with, not only time, but with life itself. In everyday life some aspects of it are funny others are sad and still others are tragic; and so is "The Kids on the Block."
The important message Mario wants to communicate is that irrespective of the good, the bad and the ugly; the sad, tragic and funny aspects in life, all kids should have a positive purpose in life.
As long as kids do not lose track of the here and now and the next day and tomorrow, then they are not only taking space in life, but being a part of it.
The author's message is clear: "The choices we make in life will definitely dictate the life we lead."
